Mavericks Secure Sweep of Purple Eagles to Open Regular Season

The Omaha Mavericks secured a weekend sweep over the Niagara Purple Eagles with a gritty 2-1 victory tonight.
The Mavericks got things going early again when Griffin Ludtke scored his first career goal off a rebound from the left side circle. Zach Urdahl and Ty Mueller tallied the helpers. 30 seconds later, Niagara would go on to equalize the game at one apiece.
Omaha and Niagara would battle back-and-forth until the 9:42 mark of the 3rd period when Washington Capitals draft pick Jo Lemay fired a shot from the point that was tipped in the slot and found its way home to the Niagara net. Jacob Guevin and Mueller were credited with the assists.
Lemay's game winning goal came while the Mavericks were on a five-minute power play. Griffin Ludtke extended the lead to 3-1 for a brief moment before Niagara challenged the goal. It was deemed that the play was offsides, but it wouldn't matter as the Mavericks would go on to hang on to the 2-1 lead until the clock hit triple zeros.
Omaha had another solid night in the shot department. The Mavericks once again more than doubled the Purple Eagles in shots, outshooting them 40-17. The penalty kill went 2-for-2 on the evening and improved to 6-for-6 in two games played.
Graduate netminder Seth Eisele made his regular season debut tonight and stopped 16 of the 17 shots he faced in the contest to register his first win in a Maverick sweater.
Omaha was dominant in the faceoff circle, winning the faceoff battle 35-20. Captain Nolan Sullivan led the way once again going 15-9 on the dot for a 62.5 win percent.
Omaha heads into an early season bye week next week before welcoming Ohio State to town, October 27-28.
