Mavericks Host Leathernecks

The Basics
The Mavericks have played their last three opponents down to the wire and look to finally take one this Saturday against the Leathernecks. Both Omaha and Western Illinois fell earlier this week to St. Thomas and Denver, respectively. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Baxter Arena.

• The Mavericks returned home to Baxter Arena earlier this week and played host to St. Thomas. The second half saw 11 lead changes before the Tommies narrowly escaped with an 89-83 win.
• Frankie Fidler exploded for a season-high 33 points. It marked his third career game cracking above 30 points in a game. He did it twice last year, which included a career-high 37 points at North Dakota.
• The Mavericks nearly upset the Golden Eagles and their perfect home record last week. Omaha held the lead with 3:36 left in the game before ORU used a 10-0 run to capture the win.
• Despite the loss, Fidler and Marquel Sutton put on top-notch performances for the Mavericks. Fidler recorded his third double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Sutton added 17 points.Â

Scouting the Western Illinois Leathernecks
Western Illinois is 14-9 overall heading into the weekend finale. The Leathernecks sit 7-5 in league action after falling by 30 to Denver earlier this week. Before the loss, the Leathernecks were on a five-game win streak after beating Kansas City, St. Thomas, North Dakota, South Dakota, and South Dakota State. WIU is third in the league averaging 73.9 ppg overall and shooting 45.7 percent from the field.Â
Trenton Massner leads WIU scoring 18.3 ppg. He found his stride last month scoring double-figures in every January game. Massner collected the most recent Summit League Player of the Week following a 46-point performance vs. North Dakota, 23 points vs. South Dakota, and 30 against South Dakota State. Massner is shooting 44.7 percent from the field. He also leads the team with 5.2 apg and 1.5 spg.
Rob Jeter is in his third season as head coach of the Leathernecks. He's put together a 37-40 overall record at the helm.
All-Time Against Western Illinois
Omaha leads the all-time series 16-13. The Mavericks picked up a gritty win earlier this season in Macomb. It marked Omaha's first road win in over a season. Fidler led Omaha's scoring efforts with 21 points on 6-of-9 from the field and completed the double-double with 10 boards.
