Omaha Picked Third in Preseason Poll; Cuevas and Reese Picked as Players to Watch

The Omaha Mavericks men's soccer team rings in at third in the Summit League's preseason poll, as announced by the league Tuesday afternoon. The Mavericks have finished third in the conference the last two seasons.
In the poll, Omaha received 17 points and sits behind Denver, at one with 24 points, and Oral Roberts, in second with 22 points. Behind the Mavericks is Kansas City (13), St. Thomas (8), and Western Illinois (6).
Last season the Mavericks finished with a 8-6-2 overall record and a 5-2-1 conference record. The team will see 18 returning faces this season including goaltenders Lute Lillo Portero and Nathanael Sallah. Returning in the defensive zone is Gonzalo Cuevas, Kyle Reese and fifth year Zander Glynn. Back on the offensive side of the game, is Mathis Pilon St.-Louis last year's leading goal scorer and Theo Klein, who led the team in points, shots, and shots on goal.

The senior from Chile, Cuevas, was named to the All-Summit League First Team and All-Newcomer Team last season. Cuevas also earned a spot on the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Third Team. He started in 15 matches on Omaha's back line, where he helped the Mavericks post five shutouts. He was the team leader in assists with three and netted one goal.
Reese, the Kansas native, earned All-Summit League honorable mention honors after his first season at Omaha. He started in 14 matches on Omaha's back line, helping post five shutouts and hold opponents to a 1.44 goals against average.
Omaha will open their regular season with two road matches. The Mavericks will play Incarnate Word Thursday Aug. 24 at 7 p.m.
