Omaha Hosts York in Preseason Exhibition

The Basics
Before the official season opener on November 4 vs. MACU, the Mavericks will play their one and only exhibition of the year on Tuesday, October 29 vs. York.

• The Mavericks are coming off one of their most successful seasons in the Division I era, winning 15 games overall including seven in conference play.
• Marquel Sutton earned his first career Summit League Preseason honor after being named Second Team All-Preseason last month. In 2023-24, he was second on the team with 12.3 PPG (406 total) and led all Mavericks with 6.3 RPG (208 total boards).
• Other top returners are Tony Osburn and JJ White, the former posting a career-high 7.8 PPG (218 points) with 50 three-pointers last year and the latter scoring 272 points pulling down a career-best 97 rebounds.
• As a team, the Mavericks scored 2441 points last year (74.0 PPG), shooting .451 from the field, .326 from behind the arc, and .743 from the line. That FT% in particular ranked second in the league and 80th in the nation in 2023-24. Out of nine Summit League teams last year, Omaha's 1.1 points margin (74.0 scored, 72.8 allowed) ranked fifth overall.
• On a game-by-game level, Omaha scored at least 80 points in 10 out of 28 games last year, shot over 45% in 15 games, and held the opposition to under 70 points 14 times.
• Pablo Soumare and Aidan Skradis are the only freshman on Omaha's roster this year. Soumare, originally from Dakar, Senegal, stands at 6'5" 250 pounds and played all 12 games for the Titans in 2023-24 as part of the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, averaging 5.67 PPG.
• Among Omaha's promising group of newcomers are a trio of Division I transfers, headlined by former North Dakota State starter Lance Waddles. In two seasons with the Bison he shot .365 from the field while averaging 4.6 PPG and 1.7 RPG. Joining him in Omaha is fellow Bison Joshua Streit owned a .613 FG% and totaled just under 200 rebounds in three years with NDSU. Rounding out the trio is Isaac Ondekane who shot .529 on field goals and averaged 5.5 PPG and 3.8 RPG in his lone season at Lindenwood.
• Also joining the Mavericks are three of the top JUCO players in the country in Kamryn Thomas, Valentino Simon, and Khamani Cooper. All three led their teams to an NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship berth in 2024, with Thomas also being named an NJCAA Third Team All-American last year after totaling 533 points and 201 rebounds. Simon, his teammate at Hutchinson CC, also put up impressive numbers with 482 points and 297 boards, while Cooper totaled 465 points and 105 rebounds.
• The Mavericks have three captains this year; seniors Marquel Sutton and Tony Osburn and junior NDSU transfer Lance Waddles.
• Head Coach Chris Crutchfield has a 34-50 career record. This season marks his fourth year as a head coach and third with the Mavericks.
Scouting the York Panthers
York officially began its 2024-25 campaign last Friday, topping Calvary 104-54. Five Panthers scored in double figures in the game as the team shot 53.5% from the field and 38.7% from deep. Last year, the Panthers went 11-17 and shot 44.6% on field goals.
Leading the way for York in its opener was junior guard Chris Dixon, who went 6-for-11 with three from behind the arc for 19 points. Fellow guards Kyane Taylor and Eli Nutting both made a trio of 3-PT FGs as well.
Defensively, three Panthers pulled down eight rebounds, including senior forward Andrew Bennett who also led the team with two blocks and steal while also contributing 10 points on offense. Bennett is also the team's top returning scorer after totaling 187 points last year.
Head Coach Tree Burks is in his 12th season overall with York and sixth as its Head Coach. A three-year player at York from 2009-12, he eventually became the team's associate head coach in 2017 and helped lead the Panthers to an Elite 8 and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NAIA Tournament. He would take over as head coach in 2019, guiding York to 17 wins in his first season.

Omaha is undefeated at 7-0 all-time against York, most recently coming out on top 104-68 last year. Five Mavericks scored in double figures in the game, including Tony Osburn who had his historic 32-point performance in which he made nine three-pointers to set the new program single-game record.
