Omaha Hockey hosts Wisconsin in exhibition, dedicates ice to longtime coach and administrator Mike Kemp

OMAHA, Neb. - No. 15/17 Omaha hockey commences the 2024-25 campaign on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Neb. as the Mavericks welcome No. 10 Wisconsin to town for an exhibition. The ice rink at Baxter Arena will be dedicated to Mike Kemp, the first head coach in program history and longtime administrator, in a pregame ceremony at 6:07 p.m. Saturday's exhibition will air live on NCHC.tv and fans can listen live on the Varsity Network powered by LEARFIELD.

Coming off the program's first NCHC Frozen Four appearance last season and the team's fifth NCAA tournament berth, Omaha hockey commences the regular season on Friday, Oct. 11 in Las Vegas as the Mavericks take part in the four-team Ice Breaker Tournament at the Orleans Arena. Joining the Mavericks in participating are UMass (Omaha's first opponent), Air Force and Minnesota, the hosts of the event.
Mike Gabinet's club returns 14 and welcomes 14 newcomers to the 2024-25 Mavericks roster, including defenseman Nolan Krenzen who was appointed the 25th captain in program history, the third-straight season a blueliner captained the team.
Saturday's opponent is fitting for the occasion as Mike Kemp has been associated with Wisconsin for more than a decade, as an assistant and graduate assistant before taking the reigns and laying the foundation at Omaha. The Badgers' head coach, Mike Hastings, is no stranger to the River City as he spent time on-staff with the Mavericks and coached the USHL's Omaha Lancers from 1994-08.
