Men's Basketball Opens 2024-25 Season vs. MACU

The Basics
The Mavericks officially begin their 2024-25 season this week when they host Mid-America Christian on Monday, November 4 at 7:05 p.m. at Baxter Arena.

Quick Hits
• The Mavericks played their one and only exhibition last week vs. York, winning 101-62. Had this been an official game this would have marked the first time Omaha scored triple digits since doing so last November against York (104-68).
• Similarly, the team's 22 assists and 12 steals vs. York were both more than the Mavericks had in any game last season.
• Nearly every Maverick saw time on the court against York with 14 out of 16 players logging minutes and 11 of them scoring at least one point.
• Marquel Sutton led Omaha in scoring with 27 points after shooting 10-for-15 from the field and 4-for-6 on three-pointers. • Other top returners are Tony Osburn and JJ White, the former posting a career-high 7.8 PPG (218 points) with 50 three-pointers last year and the latter scoring 272 points pulling down a career-best 97 rebounds.
• As a team, the Mavericks scored 2441 points last year (74.0 PPG), shooting .451 from the field, .326 from behind the arc, and .743 from the line. That FT% in particular ranked second in the league and 80th in the nation in 2023-24.
• On a game-by-game level, Omaha scored at least 80 points in 10 out of 28 games last year, shot over 45% in 15 games, and held the opposition to under 70 points 14 times.
• The Mavericks have three captains this year; seniors Marquel Sutton and Tony Osburn and junior NDSU transfer Lance Waddles.
• Head Coach Chris Crutchfield has a 34-50 career record. This season marks his fourth year as a head coach and third with the Mavericks.
Scouting the MACU Evangels
The Evangels come into this week with three games under their belt already as they opened their season at 3-0 after wins against Kansas Christian, Randall (Okla.), and Ozark Christian (Mo.). Last year, MACU went 24-9 to finish second in the SAC in both the regular season and the tournament. The Evangels also earned a postseason bid and made it to the second round of the NAIA Tournament.
Senior guard Josiah Fulcher is the only Evangel to score in double figures in all three games so far, totaling 52 points (17.3 ppg) on the season. He is also second on the team in rebounding (6.3 rpg) behind fifth-year guard Tarrence Gaines (8.0 rpg/24 total). Gaines is also the only Evangel to record a double-double this year after scoring 17 and pulling down 12 boards vs. Randall.
Also notable early on is senior guard Juwan White is second in scoring (14.0 ppg) while leading the way in shooting with a .680 FG% (17-for-25) and in assists with 17 (5.7 apg).
Head Coach Josh Gamblin is one of the most accomplished NAIA coaches in the country, winning the school's first ever National Championship in his first season back in 2016 and leading them to three runner-up finishes. Like Crutchfield, Gamblin is also a member of the Lon Kruger coaching tree.

Last year's 76-59 victory over MACU marked the first ever meeting between the two teams. Grant Stubblefield led the Mavericks with 14 points, followed closely by Marquel Sutton with 13. Sutton also came a single rebound short of a double-double.
