Mavericks Pull Off Comeback Victory Over Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb.- The Mavericks erased a five-run deficit late in the game and completed the comeback against Nebraska tonight as they claimed an 11-9 victory in the lone meeting between the two teams this year.

Omaha has now won four in a row and moves to 9-17 on the season, while the Huskers drop to 12-17.

Innings 1-3
Going with a bullpen day today, Ben Weber got things started with a 1-2-3 inning on just eight pitches. In the bottom of the inning, the Mavericks quickly loaded the bases and cashed in two runs on back-to-back HBPs drawn by Trent Burkhalter and Tyler Palmer.

The Huskers would go on to take the lead the next inning on a three-run home run from Max Buettenback. Nebraska would then make it a 4-2 lead in the top of the third on a sac fly from Buettenback. Omaha managed to tie it in the bottom half of the inning as the team once again loaded the bases and got two on a single from Drew Borner and a walk to Sam Beck. Like in the first, though, the Mavericks would leave the inning with the bases still loaded.

Innings 4-6
Each team would have their biggest inning of the night over the next two, with the Huskers plating five in the top of the fourth with a couple of doubles. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Omaha loaded the bases for the third time, only this time brought all three home on a bases-clearing triple from Henry Zipay. Tyler Bishop would end the rally and make it a one-run game with a sac fly to right.

After a scoreless frame from Tanner Foerstch in the top of the sixth, Bishop would come through in the bottom of the inning with another sac fly to tie the game at 9-9.

Innings 7-9
In the bottom of the seventh, Drew Borner came through with the biggest hit of the day for Omaha as he rocketed one over the left field wall for a two-run home run to give the Mavericks their first lead of the day at 11-9.

From there all the was left was for Omaha's arms to finish of the Huskers. Luke Gainer, who got the final out of the seventh, came back out and stranded three runners with an inning-ending strikeout in the eighth, before Maddox Meyer closed things out in the top of the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Inside the Box Score
- Both teams used a combined 18 pitchers tonight, the most in a Mavericks game this year. Omaha's 10 pitchers were also a season high.
- After going 2-for-5 with a walk tonight, Zipay extends his on-base streak to nine games in a row.
- Borner went 2-for-4 and now has a six-game hitting streak.
