Mavericks men and women down SDSU
After hosting competition Friday night, the Omaha women posted their third dual victory of the weekend when they downed the Jackrabbits, 184.5-113.5. The men took down their second opponent in as many days, as well, defeating SDSU, 183-111. The women also competed in a double dual format with Nebraska-Lincoln, falling 220-79.
"Today was a great opportunity to test the character of our team after a tough week of training and a meet the night before," head coach Jessica Hessel said. "Our athletes were understandably tired, but I'm proud of the way they continued to compete without making excuses, focusing on executing to the best of their abilities one race at a time."
For the women, Kira Jacobs (Olathe, Kan.) anchored second-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay, while also posting a second place finish in a tightly contested 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.72. Addisyn Storms (Omaha, Neb.) competed in four events, with impressive finishes in the 100-yard breast (1:04.73) and 200-yard breast (2:21.74) as well as the 200-yard medley relay (29.42). Mia Jacobs (Olathe, Kan.) had strong showings in three events, particularly the 200-yard intermediate, posting a season's best time (2:10.37). Kate Novinski (Grand Island, Neb.) posted a strong event time in the 200-yard backstroke, as well (2:06.40).
Among the men, Zach Rife (Colwich, Kan.) had a powerful showing with wins in all three of his events, the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.57), 500-yard freestyle (4:41.90) and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Mason Zadina (Omaha, Neb.) claimed individual wins in the 50-yard freestyle (20.49) and 100-yard fly (50.62), while also anchoring the winning quartet in the 200-yard medley relay (1:31.48). James Lemus (St. Michael, Minn.) was impressive in his three events, winning the 100-yard freestyle (46.69) and taking second in 200-freestyle (1:42.58), while also leading off for the winning team in the 400-yard freestyle relay (45.97). Brady Wainionpaa (Hudson, Wisc.) posted season-bests in the 200-yard breast (2:05.96) and 200-yard intermediate (1:54.22), while also competing in the 100-yard breast (56.67), claiming second place in all three events. Carson Agnew finished in the top three in his three events, including a win in the 100-yard breast with a season-best time (56.49)
"Because of the culture this team takes pride in building, we were able to produce some competitive swims at a challenging point in the season," Hessel said. "While it's always rewarding to see best times when things are going our way and we are feeling fresh, I'm even more proud of the fight, resilience, and determination our athletes showed this weekend."
In diving, Brooke Robbins (Kansas City, Mo.) picked up event wins in the 1-meter and 3-meter against SDSU. On the men's side, Owen Kipp (Eagen, Minn.) was typically dominating, winning both events over SDSU.Â
"We were down a few divers for various reasons today and I thought the group that was able to compete showed great determination to perform to our standard," diving coach Eric Sprague said. "Brooke's preparation for this meet will serve her well as the season progresses. I've seen very encouraging progress from Kami Karel and Ava Ray in this early season and they will be contributing more as the season progresses."
