Bison Win Final 2 Matches to Capture Title
No. 1 ranked North Dakota State won the final two matches of a back-and-forth dual to capture the North Central Conference championship with an 18-13 victory over the No. 3 Mavericks Friday night at the Bison Sports Arena.
The loss ended the Maverick regular season at 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the NCC, while North Dakota State finished at 14-0 and 5-0 in winning its 19th straight dual match.
The Mavs had taken a 13-12 lead in the match after Patrick Allibone's 8-1 decisionover No. 7 ranked Zach Stevens at 149 pounds, but the Bison, who at one time led 9-0 in the match, recovered.
No. 1 ranked Paul Carlson scored a 3-2 decision over Chas DeVetter at 157, giving NDSU a 15-13 lead. Carlson scored on a takedown 20 seconds into the match and then got an escape in the second period.
Bison 165-pounder Mike Fiedler, ranked No. 3, used two late takedowns in the first period to take a 4-1 lead over No. 4 ranked J.D. Naig. Fiedler rode it out for a 5-3 victory to clinch the title for the Bison.
After an opening win at 174 pounds, NDSU received a key victory on Matt Hermann's overtime reversal for a 4-3 win over UNO's Nate Oviatt at 184.
Trailing 9-0 in the team score, defending national heavyweight champion Les Sigman got the Mavs started with his 38th win in 39 matches this year, 7-2 decision over No. 3 ranked Joe Bryce.
Dustin Tovar and Mitch Waite followed with wins to give UNO the 10-9 lead. No. 8 Eli Dominguez was upset at 141 before Allibone got the lead back with his clutch win at 149, setting up the Bison rally.
UNO's next action will be in the North Central Regional Tournament in St. Cloud, Minn., Feb. 29.
