Brett Perkins' PK Leads Mavs Past Western Illinois

MACOMB, Illinois - Brett Perkins converted a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, and the Mavs posted their fourth shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over Western Illinois (2-4-1) on Thursday evening in Macomb, Illinois. The win marks Omaha's (4-2-2) 13th consecutive victory over Western Illinois, and the Mavs have now allowed just two goals in their last seven meetings with the Leathernecks.
Each team had its offensive moments in the first half as Western Illinois recorded three of the match's first four shots, but Kamy Ndione continued his strong season and made two saves in the first 19 minutes. Omaha applied great pressure from the 25th to the 35th minutes, totaling four shots during that 10-minute span, three of which were on goal. Neither team was able to capitalize on its first-half chances, and the match remained scoreless heading into halftime.
It didn't take long for the Mavs to strike in the second half as Perkins drew a foul inside the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick for his third goal of the season.
The Mavs continued to put pressure on Western Illinois with the lead as Maguire Perkins got three good looks in the 60th minute and another in the 71st minute but was unable to convert.
The Mavs' defense and Ndione were terrific in the final five minutes. The Leathernecks recorded seven shots during the final five minutes, but Ndione and the Omaha backline held strong to keep Western Illinois off the board. Ndione recorded a career-high nine saves for the Mavericks.
Omaha will return home next Saturday to face Delaware to begin Summit League play. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Caniglia Field.
