March 24 Event Will Honor National Wrestling Champ
The national champion Maverick wrestling team will be honored at 12:30 p.m. on Wed., March 24 in the atrium of the Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse on the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus. The event is open to the public.
Coach Mike Denney's Mavericks captured their second NCAA Division II title March 13 at Mankato, Minn., on heavyweight Les Sigman's victory in the final match of the tournament. UNO, trailing by two points entering the Sigman bout, edged second-place North Dakota State, 97.5-95.
Denney, now in his 25th season, guided the 1991 Mavericks to the national championship. UNO also won the 1970 NAIA championship.
