Sigman, Denney Earn NCC Honors
Nebraska-Omaha sophomore Les Sigman has been named the North Central Conference Wrestler of the Year by a vote of league coaches. The coaches also selected Minnesota State's Jason Rhoten as the Freshman of the Year and Nebraska-Omaha's Mike Denney as the Coach of the Year.
Sigman, a native of Sturgis, S.D., finished the season winning the heavyweight NCAA Division II national championship and the North Central Conference championship for the second straight season. He tallied a 45-1 record, with his only loss to Cole Konrad of Minnesota on November 22, a loss Sigman would avenge the very next week. He won the final match of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championship by medical default, a win that lifted UNO to the national title.
Denney led Nebraska-Omaha to the 2004 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championship. The Mavericks had six wrestlers earn All-America honors, including national champion Sigman. Two wrestlers, Patrick Allibone and Dustin Tovar, finished second while Eli Dominguez and J.D. Naig finished third in their weight classes. Denney, who finished his 25th season, also guided the 1991 Mavericks to the national championship. UNO also won the 1970 NAIA title under Coach Don Benning.
