Sigman's Midlands Medal a 1st for a Mav
Two-time defending NCAA II heavyweight champion Les Sigman did something over the holidays that no other Maverick wrestler has been able to match when he placed in the prestigious Midlands Invitational, held at Northwestern University.
Sigman was seeded No. 2 heading into the Dec. 29-30 meet and won twice on Friday, defeating Jacob McGinnnis of Boise State with a technical fall, 16-0 in 4:37 and Ramel Meekins from Rutgers University, 5-4.
Saturday he pinned No. 7 seed Mike Behnke from llinois in 3:06 in the quarterfinals, but Indiana's Pat DeGain edged Sigman in overtime, 4-3, in the semifinals before going on to win the tournament.
In the consolation round, Sigman lost to Bode Ogunwole of Harvard, 5-3, and also was injured, keeping him out of the fifth place match. With his sixth-place finish, Sigman became the first UNO wrestler to place in the tournament.
