Mavs Edge MSU in Second Round of NWCA National Dua
Cleveland, Ohio -- Top-ranked Nebraska-Omaha edged North Central Conference rival Minnesota State, Mankato 18-15 to advance to the semifinals of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals Tournament at the Cleveland State University Convocation Center. The Mavericks will meet fourth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney in the tournament's semifinal at 9 a.m. (eastern time) on Saturday, Jan. 22.
Each team won five bouts, but the Mavericks relied on bonus points to score the victory. UNO used major decisions by, Eli Dominguez (141), Patrick Allibone (149) and J.D. Naig (165) to score an additional bonus point in each bout.
The Mavericks, who defeated No. 10 Findlay (Ohio) 29-14 in the first round earlier Friday, led 15-6 with four matches left, but Minnesota State won three straight at 174, 184 and 197 to tie it 15-15.
That left it up to two-time defending national champion Les Sigman at heavyweight. Sigman scored the opening takedown before No. 8 Mike Engelmann gained a reversal to tie it 2-2. Sigman shut out Engelmann the rest of the way in a 7-2 win.
