Mavs Win 2, Advance to Semifinals
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- J.D. Naig and Les Sigman each recorded falls to lead the Mavericks past Augustana, 28-11, and into the semifinals of the National Dual Meet Tournament. UNO will wrestle against Central Oklahoma Sunday morning at 11 as it continues its quest for a second straight title in the tournament.
The Mavericks won seven of nine matches to score a 24-9 win over Fort Hays State in Saturday's first round.
UNO (2-0) won the first three matches to claim a 10-0 lead over the Vikings in the quarterfinal match. Naig, at 174, scored a fall in 4:11 over Dusty Wilking for a 22-3 lead to clinch with win. After the Vikings won the next two matches, Sigman pinned Cris in 2:30 to improve to 11-0.
Central Oklahoma advanced with a 22-11 win over Nebraska-Kearney in the quarterfinals.
The winner will advance to the championship match at 3 p.m., with the loser wrestling for third place at 1 p.m. The Mavericks are seeking their third title in the event. Their first came in 1997.
UNO won last year's meeting with the Bronchos, 31-5, however UCO holds an 11-7 edge in the all-time series.
