Mavs Stop Minnesota State for Title
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Mavericks won the first five matches helping them stop Minnesota State, Mankato, 20-10, for their second straight National Dual Meet Tournament championship Sunday. Senior heavyweight Les Sigman, who went 4-0 in the event, was named the Division II outstanding wrestler.
The win was the third for UNO, following titles in 1997 and 2005.
Ross Taplin and J.D. Naig recorded key pins to boost the Mavericks past Central Oklahoma, 28-12, and into the title match earlier Sunday
After the Mavs won the first three matches the Bronchos came back with a win before Patrick Allibone earned a decision for a 12-3 UNO lead at the midway point. Taplin then pinned Cort Petersen in 2:54 at 165 pounds and Naig followed with a fall in 4:23 over Adam Ingram at 174 pounds for a clinching 24-3 lead.
