Garcia, Taplin, Marrs Capture Titles at UNK Open
KEARNEY, Neb. -- Sophomores Cody Garcia (125 pounds) and Ross Taplin (165 pounds) and redshirt freshman Jacob Marrs (197 pounds) all captured individual titles Saturday at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Loper Open. The unscored meet featured over 300 wrestlers from 21 schools.
Garcia, the defending NCAA II champion, went 4-0 in the meet including two pins. Garcia defeated Ben Kjar of Utah Valley State, 3-1, in the championship match.
Taplin went 5-0 in the tournament with one fall. He defeated Ben Hunter of Chadron State, 6-4, in the title match.
Marrs was 4-0 in the tournament with one pin and one major decision. Marrs, who had just one point scored against him in the entire tournament, defeated Kelsey Empting, 5-0, in the championship bout.
