Mavericks Hold Off UNK, 23-13
KEARNEY, Neb. -- No. 1 ranked UNO won five straight matches in the middle weights and heavyweight Les Sigman capped a 23-13 win over Nebraska-Kearney with his 65th straight victory Saturday.
The No. 5 ranked Lopers scored a pair of decisions in the first two matches before Mitch Waite, Shane Unger and Patrick Allibone registered decisions to give UNO a 9-6 lead.
Ross Taplin followed with a pin in just 78 seconds over Keenan Curdy at 165 and J.D. Naig scored a major decision over Paul Sutton for a 15-6 edge.
The Lopers responded with a decision at 184 and a major decision at 197 to pull within 19-13 and set up a showddown between Sigman, a three-time national champion, and No. 2 ranked heavyweight Tervel Dlagnev. Sigman got his second major decision of the weekend, 11-3 to secure the Mavericks' eighth straight dual meet win.
The Mavericks return to Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse to face No. 2 ranked Minnesota State, Mankato Friday night at 7.
