Mavericks Add Defensive Coach to Football Staff
University of Nebraska at Omaha head football coach Pat Behrns said Wednesday that Alex Wood has joined the staff as an assistant coach. Wood, the secondary coach at East Stroudsburg University the past two seasons, will coach the outside linebackers at UNO and will also be the special teams coordinator.
Wood replaces Terry Samuel on the Maverick staff. Samuel resigned earlier this year to take a position as an assistant coach at Southeast Missouri State.
"We're very fortunate to be able to add a coach with Alex's background to our staff in time for spring practice," Behrns said. "He is familiar with the North Central Conference and he understands what it takes to compete at the national level."
Wood, a native of Massillon, Ohio, is a 1996 graduate of Winston-Salem State University. He spent three seasons, from 1999-2002 as the defensive line coach, special team coordinator and vide coordinator at Minnesota State, Mankato, of the NCC. At East Stroudsburg, he also was the special teams coach and video coordinator. Over the past two seasons East Stroudsburg was 10-2 and advanced to the national quarterfinals and 11-3 the past year before losing in the national semifinal game.
The Mavericks, 8-3 last season and co-champions of the NCC, will open spring practice March 20.
