Mav QBs Lead Way in 1st Scrimmage
The Mavericks' two quarterbacks spread 132 yards of passing among 12 different receivers in a 55-minute controlled scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Caniglia Field that marked the first game-condition workout of the spring.
"For the first day in pads and the first scrimmage, I was pleased, although I didn't think the hitting was real crisp," head coach Pat Behrns said. "I would have liked to have seen more physical play on both sides."
Junior Zach Miller, Norfolk, Neb., complete 7 of 10 for 76 yards and redshirt freshman Greg Wunderlich, Naperville, Ill., connected on 8 of 15 for 56 yards.
"I thought the quarterbacks played pretty well on the whole," Behrns said. There was no scoring because the Mavericks have not yet worked on any red zone offense.
The Maverick offense had 222 yards of total offense in 54 plays for the day.
Redshirt freshman Robert Wesley, Omaha Central, led the rushing attack with 30 yards on eight carries, while junior Nate Wurth, Omaha Westside, a regular in 200 in the Maverick backfield, had 22 yards on just four attempts.
The team will take Sunday and Monday off and return to the practice field Tuesday afternoon at 3:30.
