Mav Defense Strong in Spring Game

The Maverick defense held the upper hand throughout most of Saturday's spring-practice ending Red-White game at Caniglia Field. The defensive unit held the offense to just one touchdown and picked off four passes in front of an estimated 1,000 fans.
Junior running back Nate Wurth capped a nine-play, 70-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run for the only score of the day. It came on the opening drive of the game.
Wurth finished the day as the leading rusher with 79 yards on 14 carries. Redshirt freshmen Robert Wesley added 44 yards on 12 attempts and Arsenio Richardson 42 yards on 11 carries.
Cornerbacks Reed Taylor, Matt Ajuoga and Mike Ritchie and linebacker Antwain Woods each picked off passes. Ritchie returned his 23 yards and Woods ran his back 16 yards, but neither resulted in scores.
The offense ran off a total of 111 plays, gaining 174 yards rushing and 274 through the air.
Junior quarterback Zach Miller completed 12 of 29 for 170 yards, but was picked off three times. Redshirt freshman Greg Wunderlich, Naperville, Ill., completed 13 of 22 for 104 yards and one interception.
Senior All-American tight end Zac Herold led all receivers with 87 yards and five catches. A total of 13 players caught passes in the game.
Leo A. Pearey Awards, for the players showing the most improvement during spring practice, went to Chris Smith, Jacob Chandler, Jason Zabka, Greg Wunderlich and Lewis Fleisher. The award, started in 1968, is named after 1935 halfback Leo Pearey, the first-ever All-American at UNO.
