Passing Game Shines in Mav Scrimmage
The Mavericks' two quarterbacks passed for 219 yards and All-American tight end Zac Herold caught five passes to highlight the second game-type scrimmage of spring practice Saturday afternoon at Caniglia Field.
"This was a better showing than last week," head coach Pat Behrns said of the 79-play, 75-minute workout. "There was progress and there were a lot of good things we saw today."
The offense was an efficient 4-for-5 in the red zone Saturday, scoring three times on short runs and once on a pass.
Fullbacks Josh Sansoni, Stuart Frazier and Tony Korth each scored from inside the three yard line and redshirt freshman quarterback Greg Wunderlich passed eight yards to tight end Brian Masker for the other touchdown.
Wunderlich, from Naperville, Ill.,who missed on his first four passes, finished 10-for-17 for 96 yards. Junior Zach Miller, Wahoo, completed 10 of 19 for 123 yards.
Herold, a senior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, had three catches over 20 yards in his 91-yard total, all coming from Miller.
Junior tailback Nate Wurth, Omaha, led the rushing attackwith 58 yards on 13 carries, and redshirt freshman Arsenio Richardson, Minneonka, Minn., had 38 yards on nine attempts.
The Mavericks will take Sunday and Monday off before returning to the practice field Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
