No. 2 UNK Edges Mavs to Claim National Duals Title
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The fourth-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team fell just short in its bid for a third-straight NWCA National Duals title as second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney edged the Mavericks, 20-19, in the championship match Sunday afternoon at the UNI Dome.
The Mavericks led 19-14 entering the final match at heavyweight, but the Lopers' top-ranked Tervel Dlagnev pinned Tony Lewis in 2:47, giving UNK six points and the title.
The Mavericks, who saw their 13-match winning streak snapped, won five matches in the dual with Sim Bribieseca (141), Todd Meneely (149), Ross Taplin (165), JD Naig (174), and Jacob Marrs (197) all picking up victories.
UNO picked up bonus points from Taplin as he pinned Taylor May in 6:20 and from Naig who earned a major decision over Dan Hospodka, 9-1.
