Mavs Return Home to Host SCSU, Brand Open
The UNO Maverick wrestling team will open conference action this week when they host St. Cloud State on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Sapp Fieldhouse. UNO will host the Brand Open on Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Sapp Fieldhouse. About 120 wrestlers are expected to compete in the meet, which will get underway at 9 a.m.
Records & Rankings
The Mavericks are ranked No. 4 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association top 20 poll released on Jan. 10. Six Mavs are ranked among the top eight in individual rankings.
Defending national champions Cody Garcia (125) and J.D. Naig (174) are both ranked No. 1. Ross Taplin (165) and Jacob Marrs (197) are both ranked second in their respective classes. Todd Meneely (149) is ranked third and Tony Lewis (285) is eighth.
The Coach
Mike Denney is in his 28th season as the Maverick head coach. The Dakota Wesleyan graduate has a 265-102-5 career mark. He has twice been named the NCAA II National Coach of the Year and led the 1991, 2004, 2005, and 2006 Mavericks to NCAA II national championships.
Last Week
The Mavericks finished second last week at the NWCA National Duals, falling in the championship match to second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 20-19. UNO"^defeated Findlay 33-7 and Pitt.-Johnstown, 22-13 on Saturday to open the tournament.
UNO then upset top-ranked Central Oklahoma, 20-16 in the semifinals, before falling to the Lopers, foilingthe Mavericks' bid for a third-straight National Duals title.

On Deck
UNO will host perenennial NCAA Division III power Augsburg at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26 in the Sapp Fieldhouse. The Mavericks will then travel to Blair, Neb. to take on Dana in a 7 p.m. dual.
