Mavericks Rebound with Win Over Dana, 26-9
BLAIR, Neb. -- In a matchup of defending national champions, the second-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks defeated the NAIA's fifth-ranked Dana College, 26-9, on Saturday night at the The Gardner-Hawks Center. The Mavericks, who dropped a 23-13 decision on Friday to Augsburg, improved to 5-2 on the season with the victory.
Nebraska-Omaha won seven of 10 matches in the dual, highlighted by top-ranked JD Naig's pin over Josh Ghobadpoor in 3:21 at 174 pounds. UNO also got bonus points when No. 1-ranked Todd Meneely (141) won by technical fall over Brian Graham, 23-7, in 5:31.
Senior Jimmy Ball (125) got the Mavericks on the board first with a 3-1 win in sudden victory overtime over fifth-ranked Craig Trampe.
The Vikings rebounded with two-straight decisions to take a 6-3 lead after three matches. At 133 pounds, second-ranked Burke Barnes defeated freshman Jeff Rau, 13-7. Marcus Hilario (141) then lost to second-ranked Terrence Almond, 7-5.
Meneely's technical fall and 157-pound Henry Wahle's 4-2 decision over fifth-ranked Jason Bilinski helped UNO regain the lead, 11-6.
UNO increased its lead to 14-6 with 165-pound Ross Taplin's 5-3 decision over Bulla Tuzon. After Naig's pin at 174, freshman Austin Boehm (184) earned his first career dual victory with an 8-3 win over seventh-ranked Webster Farris giving the Mavericks a commanding 23-6 advantage.
Top-ranked Jacob Marrs (197) decided Wade Jordan, 7-3 for the final Maverick victory of the dual.
In the night's final match, Dana's Jesse Boggs edged Tony Lewis, 3-2.
The Mavericks improved to 11-0 in the all-time series against Dana. However, the two teams have not met since the 1980-81 season.
UNO will host two of the top teams in Division II next week, beginning with a 7 p.m. dual against No. 3 Central Oklahoma on Friday, Feb. 2. The Mavericks will then host top-ranked Nebraska-Kearney on Feb.3 beginning at 7 p.m. Both matches will be televised live on NET2 (Cox Channel 16).
