R.J. Nebe Service to be at Fieldhouse Friday
A memorial service for UNO Athletic Hall of Fame wrestler R.J. Nebe will be Friday night at 7 at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. The arena was the site of Nebe's 1988 national championship win in the NCAA II tournament.
Nebe, 42, passed away on Monday morning from leukemia.
A four-time Division II All-American, Nebe also was a Division I All-American in 1988, finishing sixth at 177 pounds. He finished third twice at 190 in the Division II national meet and was a runner-up at 177 as a junior before capturing the championship as senior in 1988, helping to lead the Mavericks to a second-place team finish.
Nebe ended his career as the all-time winningest wrestler at UNO with a 153-31-4 record and was the school's first four-time All-American. That stood until heavyweight Les Sigman surpassed the win total in 2006.
He won two North Central Conference titles at UNO and three times won more than 40 matches in a season. Nebe was twice named the UNO male athlete of the year and in 1996 was inducted into the UNO Athletic Hall of Fame.
At Millard North High School, he was 89-16, won the Metro Conference title and placed third in the state championship tournament.
After his graduation, he continued to work with the Maverick wrestling program and served as a color commentator on televised matches. He also was a volunteer assistant coach for high school wrestling powerhouse Skutt Catholic High School.
