Sigman Finishes 3rd, Meneely 5th at World Team Tri
LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Former Maverick heavyweight four-time national champion Les Sigman finished third, while current UNO 149-pound national champion Todd Meneely placed fifth at the USA Wrestling World Team Trials on June 9-10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Sigman competed at 265 pounds while Meneely wrestled at 132 pounds.
Sigman, who won four NCAA Division II heavyweight titles from 2003-06, competed in a field that included three NCAA Division I national champions.
Sigman opened the tournament with a 1-1, 2-0 decision over former Nebraska national champion and World bronze medalist Tolly Thompson. He then lost by technical fall to two-time Division I national champion Steve Mocco, 6-0, 8-1. Sigman rebounded with wins over Michael Irving, 2-0, 6-0, and John Laboranti, 7-0, 2-0.
Meneely, who will be a junior for the Mavericks next season, competed in a field that consisted of six Division I All-Americans, including four national champions.
Meneely started the tournament with a 2-0, 3-2 decision over All-American Josh Keefe of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Meneely then suffered a tough 1-0, 1-0 loss to University of Iowa All-American Mike Zadick who finish second at the 2006 World Championships.
Meneely rebounded with a 6-0, 2-2 decision over Eric Metzler of Northwestern and a 2-0, 2-2, 1-0 win over Arizona State All-American Danny Felix. He ended the tournament with a 7-0, 6-0 loss to Division I national champion Shawn Bunch of Edinboro.
