Mavs Advance to Finals with 25-13 Win over Broncho
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The second-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team won four of the final five matches to pull away for a 25-13 win over No. 3-ranked Central Oklahoma in the semifinals of the NWCA National Duals Sunday morning.
The Mavericks will face fourth-ranked Minnesota State, Mankato at 3 p.m. in the championship match as UNO aims to win its third National Duals title in the last four years. Minnesota State upset top-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 25-15, in the other semifinal.
The victory over the Bronchos gave UNO its fourth-consecutive appearance in the championship match of the National Duals.
The Mavericks started out on a high note as redshirt freshman Matt Rein (125) shocked top-ranked and 2007 national runner-up Tyler Zukerman, 2-1, in the first match of the dual.
After two Maverick losses at 133 and 141, junior Todd Meneely won by major decision over Brent Sarette, 12-4, to tie the match at 7-7.
Central Oklahoma re-took the lead after fifth-ranked Jason Leavitt decided senior Henry Wahle, 4-1, at 157 pounds.
The Mavericks then strung together four consecutive wins, including two pins, to pull away from the Bronchos.
Aaron Denson pinned Paul Mayfield in 6:19 at 165 pounds. Ross Taplin then decided Daniel Morrison, 10-4, at 174.
In a key match at 184, unranked Brent Pankoke upset fourth-ranked and 2007 All-American Heath Jolley, 6-1. That was followed by a Jacob Marrs' pin in 6:26 over Jarrett Edison.
