Mavericks Come Up Short Against Augsburg
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- NCAA III No. 3 Augsburg College won four of the first five bouts, then were able to withstand a late Maverick charge to come away with a 22-15 non-conference victory Friday night at Si Melby Hall.
UNO, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II, fell to 3-2 in duals on the year and will conclude their two-day road trip to Minnesota with a North Central Conference clash against St. Cloud State University Saturday afternoon at 2. The match between the Mavericks and the Huskies will be available via a live webcast.
The Mavericks went into Friday's match against the NCAA III defending national champions fighting injuries and illnesses and minus a number of their top wrestlers. The Mavs were without 2006 national champion and No. 1 ranked Cody Garcia (125), as well All-Americans Sim Bribieseca (141) and Ross Taplin (174).
The Mavs dropped the first three bouts of the match before No. 3 ranked Aaron Denson's 5-2 decision over Brandon Klukow at 165 pounds got the Mavericks on the board. However, UNO was forced to forfeit the next bout at 174 pounds because of an illness and trailed Augsburg, 15-3, halfway through the match.
UNO stormed back and erased the 12-point deficit by capturing the next three bouts. No. 3 Brent Pankoke won a, 5-3, decision at 184 pounds over Robbie Gotreau, cutting the Augsburg lead to 15-6. No. 2 Jacob Marrs pinned Wallace O'Connor in just 2:14 of their 197 pound bout to bring the Mavericks within 3 of Augsburg, 15-12, while Tony Lewis, ranked No. 8 at 285, tied things up, 15-all, winning a tight 2-1 decision over Andy Witzel.
Augsburg was able to stop the UNO momentum, winning the final two bouts, a decision at 125 and major decision at 133, to cap a 22-15 victory. Augsburg now owns a 3-1 series edge against the Mavericks in duals.
