UNO Bounces Back with 25-16 Win Over Huskies
ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The second-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team snapped a two-match losing skid, by winning six of ten bouts en route to a 25-16 North Central Conference victory Saturday over St. Cloud State at Halenbeck Hall.
With the victory, the Mavericks improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the NCC. UNO handed sixteenth-ranked St. Cloud State its first loss of the season, as the Huskies fell to 8-1 overall and 1-1 in the league standings.
"St. Cloud is a tough team and they have really been on a run lately," said Maverick Head Coach Mike Denney. "It is great to see what Steve (Costanzo) and his team have been able to accomplish."
The dual started out at 149 pounds where top-ranked Todd Meneely went up 10-4 in the first period and then cruised to a 17-8 major decision over Chad Kubasch.
After a loss at 157 pounds, Aaron Denson helped UNO regain the lead with a 7-4 win over Tom Anderson at 165 pounds. The bout was tied at 4-4 entering the third period before Denson gained control.
For the second-straight night, UNO was forced to forfeit at 174 pounds with Ross Taplin out due to an illness. That gave the Huskies a 10-7 advantage in the match.
Third-ranked Brent Pankoke (184) helped the Mavericks take the lead for good, recording his ninth fall of the season, as he pinned seventh-ranked Brad Padgett in 2:33.
Knotted at three after two periods, second-ranked Jacob Marrs used a neutral and riding time to take a 5-3 decision over Nick Wilkes at 197 pounds.
Eighth-ranked Tony Lewis (285) needed little time to dispose of Chris Schiewe, registering a pin in just 24 seconds.
The Mavericks last victory of the dual came at 133 pounds, where Mario Morgan outlasted Josh Williams, 5-2.
UNO earned bonus points in the match with two pins and a major decision, making the final tally 25-16.
The Mavs were still without national champion and No. 1-ranked Cody Garcia (125), and All-Americans Sim Bribieseca (141) and Austin Boehm (184), all having been sidelined by injuries.
"We were without some key guys this weekend," Coach Denney said.
UNO will have little time to recuperate, they travel to Edmond, Okla. next Friday, Feb. 1, to compete against third-ranked Central Oklahoma, before heading to Kearney, Neb. to take on the fourth-ranked Lopers the following day, Feb. 2.
