Chris Simpson Joins Maverick Staff
University of Nebraska at Omaha head coach Pat Behrns said today that Chris Simpson will join the football staff as a defensive line coach and the special teams coordinator.
Simpson has spent the past five years at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as an assistant coach, helping the team earn three straight berths in the NCAA Division II championship game, including the 2007 national title. He replaces Alex Wood, who accepted a position at Wayne State College, on the Maverick staff.
“I think we’re very fortunate to have a coach with Chris’ experience to become a part of our staff,” Behrns said.
Simpson graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Wisconsin-Whitewater in physical education in 1998. He earned his masters in curriculum and instruction in 2004. Last season, he served under UWW head coach Lance Leipold, a former UNO assistant and offensive coordinator.
During his coaching career, Simpson coached two years at Waunakee (Wis.) High School, one year at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, as a graduate assistant, and one year at Wisconsin-Platteville. In the summer of 2006, Simpson was selected as a participant at the NCAA Men’s Football Coaches Academy. He also received an NFL Minority Coaching Internship from the Green Bay Packers, for defensive line and special teams in the summer of 2006. Last summer, Simpson earned a return trip via the NFL’s Minority Coaching Internship Program, this time with the Dallas Cowboys.
He will also be an instructor in the school of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at UNO.
Simpson and his wife, Nicole, have three sons, Jarryn, Riley and Noah.
