Mavs, SDSU Draw, UNO Falls From First

Brookings, S.D.- The Mavs entered the weekend in a three-way tie in the North Central Conference's top spot but battled to a scoreless double-overtime draw with South Dakota State Sunday to fall all alone to the second-place spot. The No. 8 Mavs (13-1-2) outshot the Jackrabbits 37-14 and managed 17 shots on goal, but failed to score for the third time this year, setting a school record for season shutouts.
Junior Ashley Grace and senior Stephanie Kirby led the Mavs with six shots and sophomore Christen Boeckel came off the bench and joined freshman Haley Fries with four. Sophomore Amy Price made five saves in goal in her second 110:00 minute game of the year and picked up her tenth shutout.
A chance to host the NCC tournament is still up for grabs with just one conference game remaining. Minnesota State, Mankato sits at the top with a 5-1-0 conference mark, the Mavs follow at 4-1-1, and North Dakota and North Dakota State are tied for third at 3-2-1. Next Saturday will wrap up conference play for all four teams. MSU will play St. Cloud State with a win clinching the top spot. The Mavs have the only other chance to host if they win and MSU ties or loses. UNO hosted last year and has won three straight tournament titles.
The Mavs will honor seniors Stephanie Kirby, Jessica Dotson and Heidi Bargmann before Saturday's 1 p.m. game in the senior day ceremonies.
