Pile's OT Goal Sends Mavs Back to the Beach
Nov 22, 2003 | Women's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb.- Sophomore Meghan Pile's first collegiate goal came six minutes into overtime Saturday as she headed a corner kick into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie with No. 18 Northern Kentucky and send the Mavs to the final four in Virginia Beach, Va., for the second straight year. UNO will play Kennesaw State (Ga.) in a national semifinal Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. EST. The finals are set for 6 p.m., Dec. 6.
After clearing away one of NKU's best scoring chances of the game, the Mavs took the ball downfield and forced a corner kick with just over three minutes remaining in the first overtime period. Senior Stephanie Kirby, playing in front of the home crowd for the last time, took the corner kick from the right side and blasted it to a leaping Pile on the left side of the goal. Pile, one of the tallest in the box, headed it over Norse keeper Sam Westerling at the 96:13 mark for her collegiate first.
The game was played much the same as it was in last year's quarterfinal at NKU. Most of the game was played back and forth while both teams had some chances and both teams had some breaks.
After giving up just 5.3 shots per game all year, the Norse (17-3-2) were eliminated when Pile, a defender, punched in the 12th Maverick shot of the day. UNO outshot NKU 12-9 and sophomore keeper Amy Price made five saves in picking up her 12th shutout.
UNO will play second-ranked Kennesaw State (23-1), 1-0 winners over Barry, in a semifinal match, marking the first time the two schools have met each other.
