Mavericks Rally to Stop Concordia-St. Paul, 74-73

Rallying from double-digit deficits is becoming a habit for Coach Kevin McKenna's Mavericks. UNO did it again Saturday night, coming from 14 points down the second half to topple Concordia-St. Paul, 74-73, on Tola Dada's free throw with 15 seconds left in the second round of the Maverick Classic at Sapp Fieldhouse.
Friday night, the Mavs trailed by as many as 15 points before Ty Graham's buzzer-beating layup defeated Bellevue University, 65-64. The win Saturday kept the Mvas unbeaten on the year at 5-0 while Concordia-St. Paul fell to 1-3.
Trailing 48-38 at halftime, the Mavs went 14 points down in the early moments of the second half and trailed by 66-53 with 8:36 to play. But an 18-3 run helped UNO catch and pass the Golden Bears.
Zac Robinson hit a three-pointer and a deuce and Chris DeSpain had a pair of field goals in the stretch. Andre Tarpley capped the run with a jumper with 2:04 left that gave UNO its first lead of the game, 71-69.
Joey Peel tied the game for the Golden Bears, but Ryan Curtis rebounded and scored inside for a 73-71 UNO edge with 1:04 left.
Ray Dawson tied the game again for Concordia with a field goal with 42 seconds left. Dada then drew a foul from CSP's Brian Jamros with 15 seconds left and hit the first of two shots. The Golden Bears had a chance for the win with nine seconds left, but the UNO defense forced a desparation shot that fell short and Curtis gobbled up the rebound to preserve the win.
Tarpley led UNO with a season-high 19 points, while Curtis added nine points and 10 rebounds. Robinson also had nine points for the Mavs, while Dada finished with seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Dan Torrez led the Golden Bears with 14 points, Peel and Justin Vandenberg had 13 and Jamros 12.
