Mavs Face D I Drake and Top-Five Metro State

The Mavs will finish a string of four first-time opponents when they face NCAA division I Drake Friday and Metro State Sunday, the third-ranked team in D II. Last weekend the top-ranked Mavs blanked first-timers Washburn and Emporia State 4-0 and 2-0, respectively, and outshot the two 87-7 to improve their record to 8-0-0 and pickup shutout number seven. Maverick goalkeepers have held opponents to just one goal and have a 0.12 goals per game average.
Friday the Mavs will travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on Drake at 7 p.m. in their second night game on the schedule. On Sunday the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben will host Metro State at 1 p.m. in the final match before conference play begins. The Mavs hold an 18-game win streak at Ak-Sar-Ben.
About the Bulldogs and Roadrunners
Drake, the award winner for top first-year program in division I last year by Soccer Buzz magazine, will host the Mavs at the new Cownie Soccer Complex where the Bulldogs hold a 1-1 record (4-4-0 overall). The Bulldogs went 3-1-3 last year at their old facilities and finished 8-8-4 (2-3-2 Missouri Valley Conference) overall. This year they were picked third in the Valley. Last year's top-scorer Andrea Schmitz (28 points- 10 goals, 8 assists), MVC freshman of the year, returns alongside former all-conference pick Bailey Walkup (6 points- 2 goals, 2 assists). Melissa Nelson leads Drake with six points this year (3 goals) while goalkeeper Kate Stack holds a 1.33 goals per game average. The Bulldogs are coached by Corbin Stone.
First-time Maverick opponent Metropolitan State College of Denver (8-0-0, 4-0-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) has something in common with UNO besides their records- both teams were knocked off by Christian Brothers one-by-one in the final four of the NCAA tournament last year. The Roadrunner's 6-13-1 record in 2001 and 18-2-3 record last year was the best turnaround in D II history. Metro State will host West Texas A&M Friday before traveling to UNO. The Roadrunners topped the Lady Buffaloes in penalty kicks to advance to the second round of the tournament last year before CBU defeated them and the Mavs on its way to the national title. This year Metro is led in scoring by Amy Leichliter with 20 points (9 goals, 2 assists) and Naomi Clarke follows with 14 (4 goals, 6 assists). Third-team All-American pick Colleen Fellin leads the Roadrunner defense that has allowed just three goals and 8.25 shots per game this year. Head Coach Danny Sanchez, last year's Midwest Region coach of the year, begins his second season.
These two matchups are the only ones against out-of-region opponents this year for the Mavs.
