UNO Edged by Huskies in Five Games

St. Cloud State edged the UNO Mavericks 3-2 (30-18, 13-30, 30-25, 27-30, 15-12) on Saturday night, Sep. 27, in North Central Conference volleyball action at the Sapp Fieldhouse in front of 411 fans. The Mavericks drop to 9-9 overall on the season and 0-2 in the NCC. St. Cloud State improves to 8-7 and 1-1 in the NCC.
The Mavericks battled back from a 12-7 deficit in the fifth game, scoring five straight, knotting the score at 12. But, kills by the Huskies' Janes Backes and Kari Turkowski and a UNO hitting error gave SCSU the match.
Junior outside hitter Amy (Sibbernsen) McLeay, who got married on Friday night, led the Mavericks with 18 kills and 23 digs, her 13th double-double of the season. Junior middle blocker Andrea Wegner added 13 kills and eight digs, both career highs. Junior outside hitter Julia McConahay hit .360 with 10 kills, one error, in 25 attempts. Junior outside hitter Jenny Rankin contributed with nine kills and a career-high 28 digs.
The Mavericks, who recorded 15 more kills (70-55) and 13 more digs (101-88) than SCSU, were out-blocked by the Huskies, 22-8.
UNO will travel to Fargo, N.D. on Friday, Oct. 3 for a 7 p.m. match with 13th-ranked North Dakota State. The Mavericks will battle North Dakota at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Grand Forks, N.D.
