Two Mavs Put in Three as UNO Blasts CMSU 10-0

WARRENSBURG, Mo.- Freshman Haley Fries broke through for UNO Sunday, joining senior Stephanie Kirby with hat tricks as the Mavs blanked Central Missouri State 10-0 in the final game of the CMSU Classic. Fries picked up her first collegiate goals and Kirby notched her firsts of the season and first career hat trick, also the first for UNO since Oct. 27, 2001, when Brandy McSorley scored three against Northwest Missouri State.
The Mavs (4-0-0, all shutouts) took 27 shots, putting 21 on net, and three other players scored. Freshman Tricia Braziel scored her second and third goals of her career and juniors Molly Herzberg and Jaime Venhaus each added a goal as the Mavs totaled the most goals since a 15-0 win against Augustana in 2001. Picking up assists for the Mavs were Venhaus, senior Jessica Dotson and sophomore Christen Boeckel.
The UNO defense held the Jennies to just six shots after being outshot Saturday for the first time in 26 games. Sophomore Amy Price stopped the two shots that were on goal and picked up her third shutout of the year. CMSU split time in goal between Emily Bassel and Sarah Bomhoff. The two combined to make 11 saves.
UNO scored early once again as Venhaus converted a rebound in the 6th minute. Three minutes later Kirby added another from the middle of the box and Fries put in her collegiate first six minutes later off a pass in the box from Venhaus to end the first half scoring. The Mavs came out strong in the second with a Kirby goal two minutes in. She then converted a penalty kick for the hat trick as the Mavs scored three times in three minutes with Herzberg and Fries notching unassisted tallies. Dotson then helped Fries complete the hat trick when she found her on the right side of the box at 62:05. Braziel then ended the scoring with two more, three minutes apart, with the last being assisted by Boeckel.
UNO will travel to Missouri Southern and Southwest Baptist next weekend to finish a five-game road trip.
