Second Half Rally Falls Short, 102-93

Minnesota State, Mankato withstood a furious second half rally by UNO in the closing minutes to post a 102-93 win at Sapp Fieldhouse in front of 2,200 fans. UNO, trailing by 27 points with less than eight minutes left, scored 12 straight points and sliced the margin to nine in a span of 4:35.
Arthur Boults came off the bench the second half to lead UNO with 19 points, hitting 9 of his 14 shots. Randy Bland added 16 and Andre Tarpley 14.
The loss put the two teams into a tie for second place in the North Central Conference with 4-2 records. UNO is now 14-5 overall and MSU is 15-4. Both trail league-leading North Dakota State, which lost at South Dakota to fall to 5-1.
MSU shot a sizzling 66.7 per cent from the floor the first half, hitting 6 of 10 three-point shots, to take a 58-41 lead into the break. Minnesota State expanded the margin with a 9-2 run to open the second half for a 70-43 lead.
The margin was still the same at 84-57 with 8:32 remaining when UNO began to make its move.
Randy Bland hit one of two free throws to start a 12-0 run at the 7:48 mark, then followed with a stuff shot 15 seconds later. Arthur Boults came off the bench to hit a pair of shots and Bland capped the 24-6 run in a 4:35 span with a layup, brining UNO within 90-81 with 3:13 left.
UNO managed to cut the lead down to eight, trailing 92-84 with 2:32 left as Calvin Kapels hit one of two free throws, but MSU converted 14 straight from the free throw line to squelch the rally.
For the game, MSU hit 35 of its 42 free throws (83.3 percent), while UNO connected on just 14 of 29 and only five of 17 the second half.
Jamel Staten, who scored 17 of his game-high 25 points, led Minnesota State, while Ryan Hulke added 19. Staten also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. MSU shot 59.2 percent from the floor for the game.
