Mavs Head North for Tough Conference Matches

OMAHA, Neb.-- No. 11 UNO(12-2-1) travels to Mankato, Minn., to face Minnesota State, Mankato Saturday Oct. 16 at 11 a.m., then will battle North Central Conference undefeated South Dakota in Vermillion Sunday Oct. 17 at 1 p.m. This weekend will be a true test for the Mavs as they have the chance to move into sole possession of first place in the NCC.

UNO carries a 8-1 record versus Mankato with two wins coming in the 2003 season. UNO defeated Mankato 4-3 in conference play, then outsted them out of the NCAA regional tournament in a 3-2 nail-biting victory. Last year Mankato took over as NCC tournament champions, a capacity UNO held for three straight years. Historically versus South Dakota, UNO holds a perfect 5-0 record including three straight shutout victories.
Mavs Move up in Poll
Following a 3-0 week, UNO moved up in the NSCAA/adidas poll from their previous spot of No. 13 to 11. Three teams which the Mavs have played this year are ranked. Truman State which defeated the Mavs 1-0, remains at the No. 2 position. Metro State is right behind Truman at No. 3 jumping three places since last week. Regis, a team UNO defeated 2-1 jumped ahead of the Mavs to the No. 10 position, after defeating then No. 4 Barry University.
About the Mankato Mavericks
Mankato enters Saturday's game with a 9-5-0 (2-2-0) record. The Mavs began their conference play with two quick wins, but have since dropped two, losing to South Dakota, UNO's Sunday opponent, 2-1. Mankato also dropped a 3-2 contest, versus St. Cloud State, a team UNO beat 4-1.
The Mankato offense is led by a trio of forwards. Senior Danni Klingsing leads the team with eight goals scored. She has also tallied an assist and three game-winners. Vanessa Feltes and Kathleen Murphy have combined for 11 goals, two assists and four game-winners.
Between the pipes Jennie Dehamer and Erica Destache have shared goalie duties for he Mavericks. Dehamer, has played 918:41 total minutes and has allowed 14 goals, making 45 saves. On the other hand, Destache has played 345:22, allowed two goals and has made 12 saves.
About the Coyotes
South Dakota enters Sunday's match carrying a school- record nine-game winning streak, with a record of 12-2-0 (3-0). The Coyotes 12 wins is also a school-record, and with the share of the NCC conference lead, it is the first time S.D. has been in the top spot. Like UNO, the last time S.D. was defeated was on September 11th.
The Coyotes offensively are led by two youngsters, Tina Brummer and Ashley Ervin. Brummer, a sophomore leads S.D. with 23 points that includes 10 goals and three assists. Ervin, a redshirt freshman, has tallied seven goals adding three assists.
Coyotes goalkeeper Candice Martinez has been phenomenal in goal, only allowing 11 goals making 52 saves.
S.D. is coming off a 2-1 victory over Mankato. After a scoreless first half, Brummer scored two second half goals. The win over Mankato is the first for the Coyotes over their Minnesota opponent.
Wrapping up last week
UNO played to an exciting week, finishing 3-0 outscoring their opponent 19-2. The Mavs' first opponent Northwest Missouri State was no match for them as they scorched the Bearcats 7-1. Two first-half goals by Brandie Beale and Anne Willrett set the tone for UNO. Five second half goals including a hat trick for Beth McGill, and goals by Anne Willrett and Jane Splittgerber shut down the Bearcats. The next opponent, Augustana, was no match for the Mavs as UNO defeated the Vikings, 8-1. A hat trick by Beale and goals by Willrett, Ali Portell, Meghan Pile, Haley Fries and Erin Fosnaugh sealed the victory for the Mavs who finished the game out-shooting the Vikings, 22-7. The game-three finale for UNO were the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth. Although the 4-0 score was not as scorching as the previous two, UNO shot out to a quick lead in the first half scoring three goals. Beale capped off a stellar week, scoring her fifth goal of the week at the 12:29 minute on an assist from goalie Amy Price. McGill added her team-leading 15th goal three minutes later off a corner kick. Two minutes following, Anne Willrett netted a goal on a pass from Amber Richardson. Willrett added her second goal of the day when she scored late in the second half. Amy Price and Ellen Petersen shared goalie duties with Price allowing only one goal in the three matches.
