Mavs Rally, Slip Past Lopers, 76-73

KEARNEY, NEB. -- The Mavericks came from behind the second half behind the outside shooting of Abdul Mills and the inside play of Ryan Curtis to post their first win at Nebraska-Kearney in 13 years, 76-73, Monday night at the Health & Sports Center.
Mills, who hit five three-pointers in his first game as a Mav, scored six straight points and gave UNO the lead for good with a three-pointer with 2:36 left. Curtis followed that with a three-point play with 2:15 left to further secure the advantage. Mills finished with 20 points and Curtis added 16. Calvin Kapels had 10 points and 11 rebounds and six assists.
The game was the season-opener for both teams.
The Lopers expanded a 37-31 halftime lead to 45-33 two and a half minutes into the second session and still held a 47-36 lead with 16:24 left when the Mavs began their comeback. Back-to-back three-pointers by Andre Tarpley and Mills helped fuel a 10-0 Maverick run to narrow the lead to a point.
The Lopers, behind Chris Dean's 24 points and Will Taukiuvea, who scored 12 of his 15 points after halftime, built their advantage up to 65-60 on a pair of free shots by Dean with 3:54 left.
The Mavericks retaliated with a layup by Chris DeSpain and a three-point play by Mills to tie with 3:16 left. Mills then gave UNO the lead for good with his three-pointer.
Taukiuvea brought the Lopers within a basket when he hit a layup with seven seconds left, but Randy Bland hit one of two free shots with six seconds remaining. An off-balance three-point shot by Taukiuvea was off target.
UNO's next action will be Thursday when they host Midland Lutheran College at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
