Mavs Hold On for 61-60 Victory

VERMILLION, S.D. -- No. 25 Nebraska-Omaha avoided an upset Friday night as Levy Jones scored the game-winning basket on a layup with less than a minute to play to knock off Minnesota State Moorhead 61-60 in the first round of the South Dakota Classic at the DakotaDome.
The Mavs put up an impressive defensive stand for the final 43 seconds of the game. Jones, who finished the contest with eight points, also had a blocked shot in the final seconds to preserve the victory. The Dragons had several opportunites in the closing moments with two three-point shots and two layups but committed a turnover with less than a second to play.
UNO's Ryan Curtis led all scorers with 13 points. Abdul Mills scored 12 points and Randy Bland chipped in 10 for the Mavs.
Minnesota State Moorhead, which held the lead most of the game, led by as many as 10 points in the opening half as UNO shot a miserable 35 percent for the first 20 minutes. A three-point basket by Abdul Mills at the end of the half cut the Dragon halftime lead to 31-28.
Moorhead was led by Ridas Globys and Ben Aalto, who both scored 12 points.
Overall, UNO hit 18-of-45 field goals, including 6-of-15 from three-point range. The Mavericks also converted 19-of-27 free throws.
UNO (6-1) will meet Southwest Minnesota State Saturday in the second round of the South Dakota Classic. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
