Busy Week on Tap for No. 7 Mavs

The seventh-ranked Mavericks will have a chance to make a big statement in the conference and region as they play three games on the road this weekend. UNO, which is first in the conference and Central Region at 5-1-1, 2-0-0 NCC, will play at Wayne State Wednesday at 4 p.m. and then head to South Dakota for a 4 p.m. game Friday. The busy week will wrap up Sunday at North Dakota with a 1 p.m. matchup between the conference rivals.
On Sunday the Mavericks shut down Minnesota Duluth, then the NCC's top scoring offense, and scored four goals of their own to remain unbeaten in the league. Wayne State went 1-0-1 in a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games to move to 4-5-2. In an NCC clash last weekend UND defeated USD 2-1 and also beat Missouri Western State to go to 7-1-0 and 2-1-0 in the league. South Dakota fell to 7-2-0, 1-1-0 NCC.
Nebraska-Omaha jumped up another spot to No. 7 in the country after recording its second straight shutout. South Dakota dropped from the ranking after climbing as high as 6th this year and North Dakota debuted at 24th this week.

Last time out
The Mavs held the NCC's top offense scoreless and to just three shots as they defeated Minnesota Duluth 4-0 Sunday. Freshman Amanda Iwansky scored first for the Mavericks in the 28th minute when she knocked in a deflected shot for her second of the year. Though the Mavs had just a 1-0 lead at halftime, they dominated the Bulldogs with a 9-1 advantage on shots. The Maverick reserves then stepped up in the second half and accounted for two of the final three goals. Rachel Waterhouse, a Division I transfer and Duluth native, scored her first goal since leading Troy with nine in 2002. She had sat out the previous two years due to injury. Waterhouse found the back of the net at 62:56 when she fired it into an empty net from 12 yards out with a defender on her. In the 76th minute Beth McGill scored her fourth of the year off a rightside cross from Brandie Beale. Beale earned her third assist and leads the team with 15 points. Maverick forward MaryClaire Murnan put her first three shots into the hands of the UMD keeper then scored with four minutes remaining for her collegiate first. Junior Tricia Braziel and freshman Whitney Hill assisted on the goal. The Mavericks continued their defensive domination in the second half and ended up with a 23-3 advantage on shots and 16-3 advantage on shots on goal. UMD came into the week tied for the NCC lead averaging 7.88 points per game. Senior keeper Amy Price made all three necessary saves for UNO and sophomore Ellen Petersen played the final 10 minutes as the two combined for their second straight shutout and third of the year.
UNO continues national climb
UNO remained the top team in the Central Region in the NSCAA poll and climbed to a tie for No. 7 in the national poll. The Mavs debuted at No. 4 nationally, but after a season-opening loss they dropped to 22nd. The Mavs have since won five straight games and gained ground in each of the last three polls. North Dakota moved into third in the region and debuted in the national poll at 24th while USD dropped out of the national poll and is fifth regionally. The Central Region has four teams represented in the top-25.
About this weekend's opponents
Wayne State is led in scoring by Melissa Benson with seven goals and 1 assist for 15 points and Kate Goss leads the team with seven assists. Freshman goalkeeper Jamie Anderson was named co-defensive player of the week in the NSIC last week, has a 2.09 goals against average and is 2-2-1 on the year.
The two in-state opponents have met each of the last five years with UNO holding a 5-0 lead in the series. The Wildcats have not scored against the Mavs since the series opener in 2000.
South Dakota's Ashley Ervin leads the team and is second in the NCC with 16 points off seven goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Keyton Wheelock is second in the league with a 0.81 goals against average and leads all NCC keepers with three shutouts. USD started the season 6-0-0 and climbed to sixth in the national poll but has dropped two of its last three and is currently unranked.
UNO is 6-0-0 all-time against the Coyotes and with a 23-2 advantage on goals, has not given up a goal since 2000.
Jenna Barr, the reigning NCC offensive player of the week, leads UND with eight goals, three assists and 19 points. Goalkeeper Ashley Rohwer leads the conference with a 0.72 goals against average and has allowed just four goals in six games. The Sioux climbed into the national ranking this week for the first time at sit at 24th.
The UNO-Fighting Sioux series was dominated by the Mavs in the early years until North Dakota broke through with a pair of wins in 2003. UND also won once last year, but the Mavs ended the Sioux's season with a 2-0 win in the NCC tournament. UNO leads the series 6-3.
Beale leads the league, is 19th in the nation in scoring
Sophomore forward Brandie Beale is the North Central Conference scoring leader with 1.00 goals per game, 2.50 points per game and 4.50 shots per game. She had a 2.8 ppg average in the September 18 release of NCAA II statistics and that total was good enough for 19th in the nation. Her 1.2 gpg average was 15th.
Beale had a big day against Augustana as she recorded her third career hat trick and added two assists for a career-high eight points. She earned conference offensive player of the week honors that week for the second straight time. As just a sophomore, she already has 51 points off 21 goals and nine assists.
Mavs are dominating shots/SOG
The Mavericks wrapped up their first two home games with a pair of shutouts and by allowing just three shots. They scored 10 goals in the two games. Overall, UNO has a 19.3-4.3 advantage on shots per game and is putting 11.3 shots on goal per game to its opponents 3.2. The Maverick offense is scoring 2.83 goals per game and the defense is allowing just 0.83.
Few chances to catch the Mavs at home this year
UNO has just six games scheduled this year at the Soccer Field at Ak-Sar-Ben. The Mavericks just finished a two-game homestand and they wrap up the home schedule with four straight games in the end of October. UNO was 10-2-0 last year at home, including two wins as it hosted and won the North Central Conference tournament.
