Mavs' Shooting Fades, Quincy Wins, 62-58
Nov 25, 2006 | Men's Basketball
OMAHA, Neb. -- Though undermanned, the University of Nebraska-Omaha men's basketball team battled stride-for-stride with unbeaten Quincy, but the Hawks came away with a 62-58 win at Sapp Fieldhouse Saturday night in the final men's game of the Thanksgiving Classic.
Center Jerry Bennett had a season-best 16 points to lead UNO (2-3), who had only eight players dressed for the contest. The Mavs were without guard Andrew Bridger who suffered a concussion the previous night against Chadron State in a battle for a loose ball.
Bennett, battling with Quincy big man Joel Box, also grabbed six rebounds. Jeremy Williams led UNO on the boards with seven, scoring five points.
The Mavericks' hot shooting from outside of late faded down the stretch, as they went 0-for-7 in the second half, and only 4-of-17 for the game. After shooting only 30.8 percent in the first half, the Hawks hit 59.1 percent in the second half.
Ryan Walker led Quincy (5-0) with 13 points, with Box right behind with 12.
Michael Jenkins scored 10 points in the first half for UNO, helping the Mavericks to hold a 28-25 lead at the break. But the shooting difficulties and fatigue in the second half allowed Quincy to outscore the Mavs 37-30 in the second half.
UNO returns to action Tuesday night at 7, hosting Peru State.
