Mavs fall to Jays in Exhibition Opener

OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha played its first of two exhibition games before a record-setting crowd at Qwest Center Omaha Wednesday night, falling to No. 19 Creighton, 73-56.
In front of 13,861 fans, the largest ever to watch a Creighton exhibition game, the Mavericks kept pace with the Bluejays for 29 minutes. But a seven-plus-minute scoring drought allowed Creighton to pull away and seal the win.
UNO got off to a fast start, opening up a with 10-5 lead, highlighted by 3-pointers from Michael Jenkins and Jeremy Williams. The Bluejays rolled off 10 straight points to gain the lead, which they never relinquished. But a tenacious Mavericks team hung in and trailed by a single point at halftime, 32-31.
With 11:20 to play in the second half, UNO trailed by only two, but Creighton turned up the pressure defensively and on the glass, rolling off 18 unanswered points and putting the game out of reach.
Jenkins led the Mavericks in scoring with 15 points, while Denny Johnston was the top rebounder with six. Creighton center Anthony Tolliver led his team with 15 points, adding eight rebounds. The Jays held a wide advantage in rebounds, 41-28, while also shooting 48 percent.
