
Mavs Advance With Thrilling Shootout Win

WINONA, Minn. -- After 110 scoreless minutes, the University of Nebraska-Omaha soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament with a 5-4 win in the shootout over Winona State Sunday afternoon at Maxwell Field.
UNO goalie Ellen Petersen made two saves in the shootout. After the second one, North Central Conference MVP Dani McCawley scored the game winner to send the Mavericks to a third round match against Minnesota State on Friday, Nov. 16. MSU also survived a shootout, defeating Central Missouri 7-6, after battling to a 1-1 draw.
The Mavs (13-5-1) once again controlled the pace of the match throughout, outshooting the Warriors 15-4 in regulation, with a 5-0 edge in shots on goal. Brandie Beale and Kellyn Kramolisch each nearly won the match in the first half, with having a shot ring off the crossbar.
Winona State (16-3-2) finally got a shot on net in the first overtime frame, but Petersen made the stop. Casey Bigsby also had a shot on goal in the period, but Warriors goalie Amanda Diehm also made the save.
The shootout was a back-and-forth affair, with each of the first two shooters scoring, the third for each missing, and the next two on each side scoring. It was finally decided in the sixth round, with Petersen making a save in the top half, setting up McCawley for the winner.
