
No. 4 Bulldogs Nip Mavericks in NCC Opener

DULUTH, Minn. -- A balanced Minnesota Duluth offensive attack combined with 30 Nebraska-Omaha hitting errors helped the fourth-ranked Bulldogs defeat No. 14 UNO 3-1 (30-14, 30-18, 23-30, 30-20) on Friday night in the North Central Conference opener for both teams.
With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 7-3 overall and 0-1 in the NCC. UMD improves to 13-1/1-0.
Sophomore Kelli Goeser led the Mavericks with 14 kills while hitting .393 on the night. Sophomore Ellen Thommes hit .308 with 11 kills, two service aces and three blocks. Also in double figures for the Mavericks was senior Carlie Christensen who notched 10 kills, while adding a match-high four blocks.
The Bulldogs had four players with double-figure kill totals led by Kari Wolford (15), Sarah Wyffels (14), Vicky Braegelmann (13), and Danielle Beckstrand (12).
The Mavericks could not get into an offensive rhythm in the first two games, hitting just .051 and .026 in games one and two, respectively, with a combined 17 attack errors.
Led by Christensen's six kills and .556 hitting in the third game, UNO responded with a .361 attack percentage to tighten the match at 2-1.
However, UNO once again was hampered by hitting errors in the fourth game, hitting just .098.
The Mavericks were led defensively by junior Annie Rice's 21 digs and match-high three service aces.
The Mavericks will continue NCC action on Saturday when they head to Mankato, Minn. for a 5 p.m. match at 23rd-ranked Minnesota State.
