OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO men's basketball team got a season-high 29 points from #Michael Jenkins# to shake off a dogged Truman State University squad, 89-78, on Wednesday night at Sapp Fieldhouse. The win improves the Mavericks record to 10-3 on the season and 4-2 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
#Andrew Bridger# got the Mavericks off to a fast start with a three-pointer and another basket to make it 5-0 a minute into the game. But the Bulldogs, who came into the game without a win in the MIAA, put together a 10-6 run to narrow the lead and set the tone for a physical first half.
Ethan Freeman hit a layup with 10:50 to go to give Truman State its first and only lead of the game at 18-17. The Mavericks then got a jumper from Bridger, a three from Jenkins and another three from #Mitch Albers# in less than a minute to open up a 25-18 lead. They led 44-38 at halftime.
In the second half, Truman State was persistent and closed to within 5 points on a three-pointer from Banks Estridge with 12:32 to go. He led the Bulldogs with 21 points including 4 three-pointers.
The Mavericks always seemed to have an answer. Estridge narrowed the gap to 80-75 with 2:01 to go, but Bridger answered with three-pointer with 1:28 to go, and the Bulldogs ran out of chances.
Bridger finished with 17 points and Mitch Albers had 15 #Dion Curry# added 11. Both Freeman and Brian Nwelue had 15 for Truman State which shot a red-hot 64% in the second half and 60% for the game.
The Mavericks return to the road on Saturday, January 10 to face Central Missouri at 3:30 p.m. The game may be heard live on 1620 The Zone beginning at 3:20 p.m.
