Maverick Men Blitzed By Bearcats, 98-85

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The UNO men's basketball team lost to the fourth-ranked Southwest Baptist University Bearcats 98-85 on Saturday night. Errant shooting in the second half doomed the Mavericks who fell into an 18-point hole and could not recover. UNO is now 16-8 overall and 10-8 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
#Mitch Albers led the Mavericks with 20 points while Andrew Bridger# added 18, and #Matt Newman# had 12.
The game was a battle of the two highest scoring team s in the MIAA, and that offense was on display in the first half as the Mavericks forged a 52-51 lead. They shot better than 63 percent from the floor led by Mitch Albers who had 15 of his 20 points in the first frame.
Southwest Baptist's Brandon Clemons hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to keep his team within a point going into halftime.
The Mavericks came out cold in the second half, and the Bearcats went on a 12-0 run to seize control of the game. When D'Ante Harris hit a three with 7:39 to go, Southwest led by 18 points.
UNO battled back, putting together a 16-6 run to close the gap. Newman's three-pointer with 3:44 to go got the Mavericks to within eight at 88-80, but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome.
The Bearcats outscored the Mavericks 47-33 in the second half while holding them to just 35 percent shooting. Southwest also had a healthy advantage in rebounding, 39-22. Six players finished in double figures for SBU led by Wendell Mardis who had 17. Matt Rogers had 16 and a game-high 14 rebounds. D'Ante Harris had 16 points, and Johnnie Harris added 15 and 10 rebounds.
The Mavericks will begin their final week of the regular season on Wednesday, Feb. 25 when they visit the Missouri Southern State University Lions at 7:30 p.m.
