JOPLIN, Mo. – The UNO men's basketball team suffered its most lopsided defeat of the year, losing to the Missouri Southern State University Lions 107-71 on Wednesday night at the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center. Only two Mavericks reached double figures as UNO fell to 16-10 on the year and 10-9 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
#Matt Newman finished with a career-high 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Michael Jenkins# had 10. #Andrew Bridger# had eight points.
The Mavericks trailed for most of the first half but got to within two on a layup by #Justin Petersen# with 2:57 remaining. From there, Missouri Southern went on a 12-5 run led by Vincent Ateba to push the lead to nine, 47-38, at the break.
The Lions continued to hit shot after shot in the second half while the Mavericks couldn't get anything to fall. Jenkins, UNO's leading scorer, had just four points in the period while Bridger, the team's second-leading scorer, was kept off the board.
Missouri Southern shot better than 60 percent for the game while the Mavericks were on target just over 36 percent of the time. MSSU outscored UNO 60-33 in the second half.
Skyler Bowlin led the Lions with 26 points while Jason Adams added 16 and Mariun Price had 15.
The Mavericks finish the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 28 as they host the Pittsburg State Gorillas at Sapp Fieldhouse. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
