UNO Men Stung By Hornets, 91-85

OMAHA, Neb. - The UNO men's basketball team got a game-high 24 points from #Michael Jenkins# but couldn't hold off the Emporia State Hornets, losing 91-85 on Saturday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse. The loss dropped the Mavericks to 14-7 on the season and 8-6 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
The Mavericks started slowly. After a three-pointer from Justin Petersen to open the scoring, UNO would go without a point for two minutes before #Dion Curry# converted a layup to get the Mavericks to within 8-5. When Emporia State's Tim Niles nailed a three-pointer with 11:28 to go in the half, UNO trailed 25-13.
The Mavericks would then go on a 19-6 run and took the lead back on the second of two free throws from Curry that made it 32-31. UNO led 41-37 at halftime.
To start the second, the Mavericks were again cold, failing to earn a point on their first seven possessions. #Andrew Bridger# finally got the Mavs back on the scoreboard with a pair of free throws with 16 minutes to go. UNO had taken back the lead it had relinquished at 43-42.
That sparked the Mavericks who would build their lead to as much as 11. When Tyler Albers converted the second of two free throws, UNO led 67-56 with 8:58 to go.
The Hornets would respond thanks to Robert Moores who had 15 second-half points including two-threes. As a team, Emporia State was 5-for-6 from beyond the arc in the second half.
ESU took the lead for good with 2:32 to play when Moores drained his second three to make it 83-80. From there, the Mavericks would miss eight of nine three-point attempts as they tried to regain the lead.
#Mitch Albers# had 23 points for the Mavs while Curry added 10. Lamar Wilbern led the Hornets with 20 points while Moores had 19. Emporia State shot better than 65 percent in the second half to earn the sweep of the two-game season series.
The Mavericks are back on the court on Wednesday, Feb. 11 when they host Missouri Western at 7:30 p.m.
